The message and the messenger – the back-story to The Work We Were Born To Do
In 1995, the words The Work We Were Born To Do appeared in my mind. I was already giving talks on finding fulfilling work, and I decided to flesh out this new idea into a talk. I gave the talk a few times and got a good response, so I expanded the material into a day-long workshop, which again was well received.
I then recorded one of my talks and offered the cassette of the talk and hundreds of people bought it.
When I was eight years old, I told my family, and anyone else who would listen, that I wanted to write a book one day. I wondered whether The Work We Were Born To Do might be the idea for the book that I had been thinking of writing since I was eight years old. Maybe it taken me to the age of 38 to work through all my own fears and self-sabotaging behaviour to actually get clear and brave enough to honour my calling and start writing that book. Even so, I had massive doubts that anyone would be interested in what I had to say and putting my messages into the public domain through a book.
I started to write, found the courage to show my writing to publishers, to show up and put my writing out there. To my amazement, one publisher said, “Yes!”.
When Element books published The Work We Were Born To Do in September 1999, it gradually became a best-seller and has since helped thousands of people around the world find what they were born to do, and experience greater happiness and fulfilment on their work, businesses and leadership.
That was just a beginning. I have gone on to blossom into becoming an international speaker, and an inspirational leadership guide, broadcaster and I have been invited to work with many household name companies. And I have written fifteen further books so far.
But the idea of The Work We Were Born To Do could have so easily stayed in my head, or the talk outlines and the book stayed on my hard-drive. Instead I managed to find the courage to actually show up, in the face of the many harsh critical voices in my mind, and learn how to structure my messages and ideas into a readable book, and find the courage in my own heart.
I am a great believer that there is a tangible power we can call inspiration, which whispers in each of our ears, nudging us with ideas that want to exist in this world, through us. Inspiration is looking for “willing human collaborators.” Without much confidence, and with a lot of fear, I said “Yes!” to becoming a willing human collaborator, and so thrilled I did.
My great pleasure today is helping you unearth unearth, clarify, craft, structure and show up with the messages you were born to share, to be a willing human collaborator and show up with your unique messages to inspire and touch you are here to serve.
