“Life, the universe, God, they aren’t withholding or hiding knowledge of your purpose from you. They have put them in your heart, but we have created so many blocks to seeing it clearly within ourselves. One of the hardest things for each of us to accept is this: it we who are hiding from our purpose. It is we who are afraid to know.”
Growing up, I had always wanted to find my purpose, why on was on this earth. But the answer seemed difficult to find. I had figured out that I had not been put on earth to sell computers to banks in the City of London. I was doing that and it wasn’t making me happy, even though I was being quite successful at it.
But discovering what I was on earth to do? That seemed to elude me. It seemed an overwhelming task. I had felt such a failure for not having found my purpose already and had beat myself up mercilessly which then made it even harder to open up to my hearts calling. My route of self-flagellation as a path to finding my purpose had made it harder, not easier.
Then I had a pivotal moment of awakening in 1986 when I discovered what I was born to do, in a seminar room at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester. I was 28 years old when I was found my purpose. Other than the day I was born, it was possibly the second most important of my life: the day I discovered Why I was born.
Actually, it was more a remembering than a discovering, a re-cognition of something that I already knew in my heart but had forgotten and buried, and was even afraid to remember. I was both inspired and terrified. Part of me wanted to hide and deny this moment of clarity.
It took me more years to gather the courage to actually turn that moment of awareness into my career and my business, but I gradually have done since 1989. I have spent much of my energy and time since then helping other people discover what they were Born To Do and show up with it.
Finding your purpose, your vocation or what you were Born To Do, can seem like a massive undertaking. But it is actually simple, but not necessarily easy. Our ego mind likes to run the show, it doesn’t want our soul having its hands on the steering wheel of our life. Our ego loves to make projects much more difficult and complex than they need be and despise simplicity. It loves to try to keep you distracted, scared, confused, unclear and not knowing.
It actually takes great humility to actually acknowledge that it is we are might harbour some fear, even terror, about finding what we were born to do.
One of the hardest things for each of us to accept is this: it we who are hiding from our purpose. Your vocation always follows from getting to know yourself more intimately and deeply. It is we who are afraid. Life, the universe, God – aren’t withholding or hiding knowledge of your purpose from you – they have put them in your heart –It takes a great humility to see that it has been us against us without then beating ourselves up even further. To take responsibility without blaming ourselves is a true
To find the calling on your heart, what is meaningful to us and what naturally draws us to it, is massively important. Your heart doesn’t deceive you – your mind and thinking can.
To help you with clear thinking about how to approach your own remembering process, I created a new signature programme at the end of 2016. The programme draws on my own personal experience as well as having supported thousands of other people over the last 25 years.
