We don’t often get to hear about the impact we have on each other, or about the miracles we can be in each other’s lives. We do our work because we love doing it; we scatter our seeds and hope some of them blossom. But I recently had a truly blessed experience that revealed the influence I’d had on someone with whom I’d had no previous contact.
On July 23rd 2014 I received an email from a Swiss lady called Antoinette, saying: “It’s my husband Andreas’s 50th birthday next week. He loves your books and work and for ages has been talking about asking you to coach him. Could I buy some of your time for him as a gift, or is there any chance you might actually be able to come over to Switzerland and be a surprise guest at his birthday dinner and then coach him the next day? It would bring both him and me great joy.”
I haven’t received many requests like that! I love to be of service when I can and one my regular prayers is: “Dear God, please use me.” So my intuition said: “Go, this will be fun.” Luckily I was able to free up two days, so I spoke to Antoinette on Skype and agreed that I would come over.
On July 31st I arrived at Antoinette and Andreas’s farm, 15 minutes outside Berne, in time for the dinner. I was operating on trust and instinct, not knowing what I was letting myself in for.
Antoinette greeted me and took me to Andreas, who did a double-take when he first saw me. I could see him go through a mental process of “Who is this surprise guest? Oh, it’s Nick!” His face broke out in a smile and he glanced at Antoinette, who clearly couldn’t wait to see what his reaction would be.
“Antoinette, just last week I was saying to you I wanted to be coached by Nick and you have made that happen. How on Earth did you do that? Thank you so much.” Andreas and I hugged each other and I wished him a happy birthday. I reassured him that we were going to spend most of the following day diving into deeper conversation so he could relax with 20 of his close friends. They all shared in Andreas’s joy, even though they had no idea who I was!
Antoinette made sure we all had a fabulous evening. The weather was warm so we sat outside and later on his friends launched Chinese lanterns to send Andreas good wishes for the year ahead. Many of his friends are leaders in their own right and run their own businesses, so we talked about inspiration, spirituality and showing up in the world. As a surprise, I also bought a book and set of inspiration cards for each of them, and I enjoyed signing the books and giving everyone a gift. Even though we had just met, I knew that I was among soul friends.
The following morning, Antoinette, Andreas and I had breakfast together and swapped stories about the previous night. I also bought Andreas a complete set of my books and CDs and even some copies of my books that had been translated into German. Andreas and I then spent several hours in powerful conversation. He had some major breakthroughs in his thinking about himself, his work and, most importantly, his purpose. We were able to unearth the why? behind his work, which allowed him to access a new level of power. I am looking forward to hearing more of the impact that Andreas has in his world because of his new-found clarity.
I also spent some time with Antoinette. She showed me around the farm and introduced me to her wonderful horses. She is passionate about helping leaders work with her horses to become more authentic in their leadership. We also looked at how she would like to show up more in the world with her work.
I didn’t want this precious time to end. We had all enjoyed such a magical connection, which continued when Andreas drove me to Zurich airport.
One of my favourite lines from A Course in Miracles is: “Every decision is a choice between love and fear.” By choosing love and trust and showing up to a group of strangers, I was able experience great friendship, openness, generosity and inspiration.
I am often asked how important it is to make plans in your business, and my answer is that plans can be helpful, but what is more important is to show up, intend for things to happen and remain open and available. This often means acting in faith.
I intend to give and receive wonderful experiences in my life, and my time with Antoinette and Andreas was truly wonderful for me too. But back in 1999 when I was writing The Work We Were Born to Do I couldn’t have planned that it would lead to this extraordinary trip. Also I deliberately leave chunks of white space on my calendar to incubate my next ideas and to leave space to respond when surprises like this show up for me.
You never know what is going to show up for you when you show up in faith with a willingness to be of service. If we do this we can have a massive and awakening impact on each other. You never know what miracles life might have in store for you when you show up with what is in your heart to do.
Andreas serves his clients and friends with a weekly video blog and he used his latest one to share his experience of our conversation. This is the video at the top of the page:
