Since I was ill with hepatitis back at the end of 2012, I feel like I have been in another significant phase of my own transformation and beginning a new chapter. The flavour of this new chapter of mine has been around leadership, and feeling a strong call into the area of leadership. Speaking about it, writing about it and coaching and mentoring leaders.
But leadership is such a loaded word. It would be easy to look around and think that “bad” leadership is the cause of problems we are experiencing and that less leadership is the solution. But I actually think that we need more leadership, but leadership with a new purpose. Spiritually, I believe that the purpose of any earthly activity is to inject more love, kindness and forgiveness in to this world.
So here is my flavour of leadership: true leadership is about bringing more love into this world; every act of love and inspiration is actually an act of leadership.
I am drawn to this flavour of leadership because it means that we are all equally capable of offering leadership in the world. As powerful human and spiritual beings, we don’t need a position, we don’t need to be anointed or appointed to leadership. It is simply a choice we can make. And it is not a one off choice, indeed each decision we make each day can be a choice between fear and leadership. Each day we can offer leadership to ourselves, in our relationships, family, community, company or organisation.
I think the world is transformed by millions of acts of loving leadership each day.
But most of us have been so deeply entrenched in a thought system of fear and guilt that it often feels almost impossible not to respond with fear, judgment or condemnation. That is our work – gradually relinquishing a thought system of fear and returning to a thought system of love.
What do you think? Do you have resistance to thinking of yourself as offering leadership? Or does it sit well with you?
So what is your flavour of leadership?
